First World War Military Training

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant reminder of the past, as we are transported to Hallam Moors in Sheffield during the First World War. The image showcases the practice trenches at Redmires Training Area, offering us a glimpse into the military training that took place here in 2015. With its aerial perspective, we are able to appreciate the intricate network of trench earthworks that were meticulously constructed for soldiers to hone their skills and prepare for battle. The disused quarry provides an ideal setting for these practice trenches, adding an element of realism to the training exercises. As we gaze upon this photograph by Dave MacLeod, our minds wander back in time and imagine the countless men who once stood within these very trenches, preparing themselves mentally and physically for war. Historic England's preservation of this image allows us to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who trained here during World War I. It serves as a powerful reminder of our nation's history and honors those who served their country with bravery and dedication. Let this evocative print transport you back in time, allowing you to pay tribute to all those who fought valiantly during one of humanity's darkest chapters – World War I.
