Castle Acre Priory BB57_00134
CASTLE ACRE PRIORY, PRIORY ROAD, CASTLE ACRE, KINGs LYNN AND WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK. View of the west front of the Castle Acre Priory, also known as the St Mary, St Peter and St Pauls Priory, from inside the ruins.
A view of the west front of the priory from inside the ruins. In the centre of the west front is a huge equilateral arch that possibly had trefoil decoration in the light. Below this is an entrance with a rounded arch at the outer wall, and a basket handle shape at the inner wall. Under this is a figure against a fence that spans the entrance. To the left is a tower three storeys high with two windows at the top and one in the middle section. Further left is the roof of the Priors Lodging, a 12th century lodging altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. The priory is a 12th century Clunaic Benedictine Priory founded in 1090 by William de Warrene, second Earl of Surrey. The site is currently looked after by English Heritage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent west front of Castle Acre Priory, also known as St Mary, St Peter and St Paul's Priory. The view from inside the ruins offers a unique perspective on this historical site located in Castle Acre, Norfolk. At the heart of the west front stands an imposing equilateral arch that once boasted intricate trefoil decoration. Below it, an entrance with a rounded arch on the outer wall and a basket handle shape on the inner wall beckons visitors to explore further. Adjacent to this entrance is a figure standing against a fence that spans its width. To the left of this central feature rises a towering three-storey structure adorned with two windows at its pinnacle and one in its middle section. This tower adds depth and grandeur to an already awe-inspiring scene. Beyond it lies the roof of Priors Lodging, originally constructed during the 12th century but later modified in both 15th and 16th centuries. Castle Acre Priory itself was founded in 1090 by William de Warrene, second Earl of Surrey. As part of Clunaic Benedictine Order, it served as both monastery and religious center for centuries before falling into ruin. Today, English Heritage diligently preserves this picturesque heritage site for all to appreciate its rich history and architectural beauty. E M Booty's masterful photography captures not only these remarkable features but also evokes a sense of wonderment at Castle Acre Priory's enduring legacy.
