Rievaulx Abbey BB57_00160
RIEVAULX ABBEY, RIEVAULX, RYEDALE, NORTH YORKSHIRE. View of the nave and choir from inside the ruins at Rievaulx Abbey.
View of the nave and choir taken from inside the ruins, with low rubble walls in the foreground and a clean line of sight to the end of the nave. In he centre of the image is a huge arched entrance through to the nave which is flanked on either side by columns and three storeys of arches. Further outwards from these are sections of walls with three storeys, the uppermost of which has brick of a different colour. At the very end is a small pyramidical top which is slightly higher than the rest of the wall, but this is only seen on the left side, as the right has been damaged. The abbey is one of the ealiest outposts of the Cistercian Order in the north of England, and it is thought that the earliest sections of the site were built betweet 1140-1150, including the nave. The abbey differs from most buildings of its kind as it lies north to south, rather than east to west. The site is owned and managed by English Heritage. Historic England is the public body that champions and protects England's historic places. © Historic England Archive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire. The image showcases a stunning view of the nave and choir from inside the ruins, providing a glimpse into the architectural grandeur that once defined this historic site. In the foreground, low rubble walls add an intriguing element to the composition, leading our eyes towards the magnificent arched entrance to the nave. This entrance is flanked by columns and three storeys of arches, creating a sense of awe-inspiring symmetry. As we move further outwards, we can see sections of walls with three storeys, distinguished by their varying brick colors. At one end stands a small pyramidical top that slightly rises above the rest of the wall. Unfortunately, on closer inspection, it becomes evident that damage has affected its right side. Rievaulx Abbey holds immense historical significance as one of the earliest Cistercian Order outposts in northern England. Its construction dates back to 1140-1150 when parts including this remarkable nave were built. Notably different from other similar structures, this abbey lies north to south rather than east to west. Today, Rievaulx Abbey is under English Heritage's ownership and management - preserving its rich heritage for generations to come. Through E M Booty's lens and expertise at Historic England, this print immortalizes Rievaulx Abbey's timeless charm and invites viewers into its storied past.
