EDITORS COMMENTS

Auburn hues of antiquity cloak the rugged terrain of Syria's Tartous Governorate, where the time-worn silhouette of Chastel Blanc, or Burj Safita, stands proud against the horizon. This medieval fortification, a relic of the Crusader era, was constructed in the 12th century by the Knights Templar as part of a defensive network in the region. The castle, also known as Chastel Blanc due to its white limestone exterior, has weathered the test of time, withstanding the relentless march of centuries. Earthquakes have left their mark on the structure, necessitating repairs and rebuilding efforts. The last known restoration took place in 1202, leaving the fortress with an intriguing blend of architectural styles and historical layers. Captured from an aerial perspective, the image reveals the castle's strategic location atop a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of agricultural terraces and verdant vegetation, providing a stark contrast to the fortress's imposing stone walls. The photograph, taken by the renowned Aerofilms Ltd, offers a unique bird's-eye view of this historical treasure, inviting us to peer into the past and imagine the tales of valor and intrigue that unfolded within its walls. This snapshot in time serves as a poignant reminder of Syria's rich history and the enduring allure of its medieval past.
