EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the remarkable portrait of "Stapleton Cotton, Viscount Combermere" painted by John Hayter in 1839. The image is a testament to the rich military history and distinguished career of Stapleton Cotton, who served as Wellington's Commander of Cavalry during the Peninsular War. Although not present at Waterloo where cavalry command was entrusted to Lord Uxbridge, Cotton's valorous actions at the Battle of Salamanca earned him great recognition. In this painting, he is depicted as Colonel of 1st Life Guards, an honorary court position bestowed upon him in 1829. The artist skillfully captures Cotton's commanding presence and regal demeanor, emphasizing his significant role within both Georgian and Victorian military circles. This historical gem offers a glimpse into a bygone era when honor and bravery were held in high esteem. Preserved within Apsley House in London, this photograph print from Historic England allows us to appreciate the artistry behind Hayter's masterpiece while delving into the fascinating life story of Stapleton Cotton. It serves as a poignant reminder that history is not merely confined to textbooks but can be brought vividly to life through visual representations such as this one.
