EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the striking image of a French Lancer of the Imperial Guard, J840005, during the Napoleonic Wars. The intricate detail of the soldier's uniform and the proud posture of his horse convey the grandeur and power of the French Imperial Guard. In 1815, at the pivotal Battle of Waterloo, this elite unit formed part of General Lefebvre-Desnouettes Guard Light Cavalry Division. They charged alongside Marshal Ney's massed cavalry attack on the British lines, aiming to break through and turn the tide of the battle. The French Imperial Guard had already seen action earlier that month, on June 16th, at the Battle of Quatre Bras. Here, they served as scouts ahead of Marshal Ney's main body, playing a crucial role in the early stages of the conflict. The engraving serves as a testament to the bravery and skill of these soldiers, who were renowned for their loyalty and discipline. The Napoleonic Wars marked a significant period in European history, with France under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte expanding its territories and influencing the political landscape of Europe. The Battle of Waterloo, fought on June 18, 1815, marked the end of Napoleon's reign and the beginning of a new era. This engraving provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers who shaped history during this time.
