The Imperial Guard, an elite force made up of veteran soldiers, was considered the cream of Napoleon's army. Their unwavering loyalty and exceptional combat skills were renowned throughout Europe. The scene depicted in this engraving is likely to have taken place prior to the Imperial Guard's fateful encounter with the Anglo-Dutch army at the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815. The Imperial Guard's repulse at Waterloo was a turning point in the battle and ultimately marked the end of Napoleon's return to power in France.
