The tempting serpent EMM01 / 01 / 042

Wells Cathedral, Somerset. Watercolour, by Elsie Matley Moore, of a 14th century stained glass window at Wells Cathedral, depicting the tempting serpent. A handwritten note on the painting reads: The tempting serpent, which is unusually well preserved. Its body and the trunk of the tree round which it twines are mainly of old glass. The blue of the body is here and there slightly stained with yellow, which gives it a delicate green tint. Two pieces of the body have been renewed, and the blue of these is of a purplish hue: this is the more strange as the new blue in the rest of the window is of an admirable hue, from The Very Reverend J Armitage Robinson, 1942

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a 14th century stained glass window at Wells Cathedral, Somerset. Painted by the talented Elsie Matley Moore, this watercolour artwork depicts the alluring serpent from biblical times. The level of preservation in this piece is truly remarkable, with its body and the tree trunk it coils around predominantly made of old glass. The serpent's mesmerizing blue hue has been delicately stained with hints of yellow, creating an enchanting green tint that adds to its allure. Interestingly, two sections of the serpent's body have been renewed over time, showcasing a purplish shade of blue that contrasts with the rest of the window. This peculiar variation only enhances the mystique surrounding this ancient masterpiece. A handwritten note on this painting provides insight into its history and provenance. Penned by The Very Reverend J Armitage Robinson in 1942, it highlights not only his admiration for the impeccable hues used throughout but also his fascination with how well-preserved this particular depiction is. As we gaze upon Elsie Matley Moore's aerial perspective on religion and medieval artistry through her biblical illustration, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen within these vibrant colors and intricate details. This print serves as a testament to both artistic talent and historical significance – an exquisite blend captured for eternity by Historic England.
