THE GLOBE, DURLSTON HEAD, SWANAGE, PURBECK, DORSET. The Globe in the grounds of Durlston Head Castle. The Globe, or Great Globe, was erected in around 1891 by George Burt, who built Durlston Head Castle and developed the estate as a tourist attraction. The globe has a 10 foot radius. Around the base a tablet records the distance to the stars and planets, and to the rear of the globe are a series of panels inscribed with quotations. Art And Design Model Sculpture Victorian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Globe" located in the grounds of Durlston Head Castle in Swanage, Purbeck, Dorset. Erected around 1891 by George Burt, the creator of Durlston Head Castle and a visionary developer of tourist attractions, this magnificent structure stands as a testament to Victorian art and design. With a remarkable 10-foot radius, The Globe offers an intricate representation of our world. As you explore this enchanting sculpture, your eyes are drawn to the base where a tablet proudly displays distances to stars and planets. This celestial touch adds an element of wonderment and reminds us how the Victorians were captivated by both earthly wonders and those beyond our reach. Adorning the rear of The Globe are panels inscribed with thought-provoking quotations that invite contemplation on our place within this vast universe. It is through these words that we gain insight into how the Victorians perceived their role in shaping history. Listed as Grade II for its historical significance, The Globe not only provides a glimpse into Victorian perspectives but also serves as an enduring symbol of tourism's impact on local communities. Norman Barnard's expertly captured photograph preserves this extraordinary piece for generations to come. Immerse yourself in this mesmerizing image - let it transport you back to an era when exploration was at its peak and discover anew what it means to view our world through Victorian eyes.
