Weoley Castle, a medieval fortification nestled in the suburbs of Birmingham, West Midlands, is depicted in this aerial photograph taken in December 2000. This historic site dates back to 1264 when Roger de Somery was granted a license to crenellate, or fortify, the land. The resulting roughly rectangular moated site, now in a state of ruin, once stood as a formidable defensive structure against potential invaders. The moat, encircling the castle, would have been filled with water, making it difficult for enemies to approach. The tall, crenellated walls, visible in the photograph, would have provided cover for archers and soldiers to defend against attacks. The castle's layout also included an inner and outer ward, with the inner ward containing the main residential and defensive structures. Despite the passage of time, the remnants of Weoley Castle continue to stand as a testament to the region's rich history. The ruins now lie in the heart of a modern suburban area, offering a glimpse into the past and serving as a reminder of the defensive structures that once dotted the English countryside. This photograph, copyrighted by Historic England Archive, captures the essence of a bygone era, inviting us to imagine the lives of those who once called Weoley Castle home and the battles that were fought within its walls.
