Airship hangars 27516_026

Airship hangars, RAF Cardington, Bedfordshire. No.1 shed was built in 1915 by Short Brothers to build two airships for the navy. After the first world war the site became the Royal Airship Works and No. 1 shed was extended and enlarged in preparation for the R101 project. No. 2 shed was brought from Norfolk and re-erected here in 1930. The sheds were later used for constructing barrage balloons

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Airship hangars at RAF Cardington, Bedfordshire. Standing tall and proud, these magnificent structures have witnessed significant moments in aviation history. No. 1 shed, constructed in 1915 by Short Brothers, played a vital role during World War I as it was used to build two airships for the navy. As time went on, this site evolved into the renowned Royal Airship Works and No. 1 shed underwent extensive expansion in preparation for the ambitious R101 project. Adding to its grandeur, No. 2 shed was transported from Norfolk and reassembled here in 1930, further solidifying RAF Cardington's significance within the aviation industry. These colossal sheds were not only instrumental during wartime but also served as crucial hubs for constructing barrage balloons that provided defense against aerial attacks. Through Damian Grady's lens, we are granted a glimpse into a bygone era where airships ruled the skies with their majestic presence. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to conquer new frontiers of flight. As we admire this image, let us reflect upon the incredible strides made in aviation technology throughout history while paying homage to those who paved the way for modern aerial advancements - all within these monumental airship hangars at RAF Cardington.
