No. 1 shed, constructed in 1915 by Short Brothers, played a vital role during World War I as it was used to build two airships for the navy. As time went on, this site evolved into the renowned Royal Airship Works and No. 1 shed underwent extensive expansion in preparation for the ambitious R101 project. Adding to its grandeur, No. 2 shed was transported from Norfolk and reassembled here in 1930, further solidifying RAF Cardington's significance within the aviation industry. These colossal sheds were not only instrumental during wartime but also served as crucial hubs for constructing barrage balloons that provided defense against aerial attacks.
