Norham Castle: A Medieval Fortress of Northumberland Norham Castle, situated in Northumberland, England, stands as a testament to the rich history of medieval defense structures. This evocative cutaway drawing by Peter Dunn from Historic England offers a unique perspective into the intricacies of this historic fortress during the mid-15th century. The castle, built on a rocky outcrop beside the River Tweed, was initially constructed in the late 11th century as a motte-and-bailey castle. However, the current keep, which dominates the image, was added in the late 13th century. The keep, with its square plan and massive curtain walls, was designed to provide a stronghold against invading forces. The drawing reveals the various components of the castle's defensive system. The thick, crenellated walls, with their arrow slits and murder holes, were designed to protect against enemy attacks. The machicolations, or defensive openings, allowed the castle's defenders to rain down missiles on attackers below. The inner ward, with its buildings and gardens, provided a sanctuary for the castle's inhabitants. The keep's interior is also depicted, with its spiral staircases, chambers, and great hall. These spaces would have provided accommodation for the castle's lord and his family, as well as serving as a gathering place for feasts and celebrations. Norham Castle's enduring presence is a reminder of the ingenuity and determination of medieval architects and builders. This reconstruction drawing by Peter Dunn from Historic England provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to explore the castle's defensive features and appreciate its architectural beauty.
