Conqueror Earthwork Graphic Illustration King Medieval Motte Norman William I

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Old Sarum: A Medieval Tableau of Power and Unity - An Illustrated Reconstruction of William the Conqueror's Reception of the Barons in 1086 Old Sarum, a historic hillfort and former settlement in Wiltshire, England, is a testament to the rich tapestry of the country's medieval past. In this evocative aerial reconstruction drawing by Peter Dunn of Historic England Graphics Team, we are transported back to the year 1086, as the Norman Conqueror, William I, receives the barons on the hallowed grounds of Old Sarum. The Norman Conquest of 1066 marked a pivotal moment in English history, and the reign of William I saw the consolidation of his power and the establishment of a centralized monarchy. This drawing offers a fascinating glimpse into the political landscape of the time, as the newly crowned king gathers his barons to assert his authority and secure their allegiance. The illustration captures the grandeur of the Norman court, with its imposing motte-and-bailey castle at Old Sarum serving as the backdrop. The motte, a man-made mound, rises majestically in the center, symbolizing the power and might of the king. The surrounding bailey, a fortified enclosure, is filled with the tents and pavilions of the nobles, their retinues, and their horses. The drawing also highlights the earthworks of Old Sarum, which date back to the Iron Age and were later used by the Romans and the Saxons. These ancient structures add an air of mystery and intrigue to the scene, underscoring the deep historical roots of the site. The meticulous attention to detail in this reconstruction drawing brings the past to life, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and sensations of a medieval gathering at Old Sarum. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring significance of this ancient site and the rich history it holds.
