EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and history of Sherborne Old Castle gatehouse in Dorset. Standing tall and proud, the south west gatehouse is showcased from a western perspective, revealing its intricate architectural details. This gateway served as the primary entrance to Bishop Rogers castle, impressing visitors while simultaneously deterring potential enemies. Dating back to the twelfth century, this magnificent structure underwent alterations during the sixteenth century. The addition of chimney stacks and windows on the second and third floors enhanced both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time, imagining knights clad in armor passing through these very gates. John Bailey's expert photography beautifully captures every aspect of this historic landmark. The attention to detail allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship but also the significance it held within Sherborne's rich heritage. As we admire this photo print, let us reflect on how structures like these connect us with our past. They serve as reminders of our ancestors' ingenuity and resilience while offering glimpses into a world long gone by. Let us cherish such treasures that bring history alive before our eyes.
