EDITORS COMMENTS
In this reconstruction drawing by Liam Wales, we are transported back in time to Eltham Palace around the year 1604. Eltham Palace, located in Greenwich, London, is a unique blend of medieval and Tudor architecture that has stood the test of time. The image offers a bird's-eye view of the palace, surrounded by its moat, providing an excellent vantage point to appreciate its grandeur. At the heart of the drawing lies the surviving Great Hall, a magnificent structure that dates back to the late 15th century. The Great Hall was once the center of social and political life at Eltham Palace, where feasts, tournaments, and royal audiences were held. The intricate design of its timber roof, with its elaborate trusses and carved bosses, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. The drawing is based primarily on two surveys by John Thorpe, a surveyor and antiquarian, who meticulously documented the palace in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The aerial perspective allows us to see the palace in its entirety, revealing the various wings and structures that have been added over the centuries. The Stuart and Tudor influences are evident in the various architectural styles, with the red-tiled roofs, tall chimneys, and ornate windows showcasing the opulence of the period. Eltham Palace, with its rich history and stunning architecture, continues to captivate visitors and historians alike. This reconstruction drawing by Liam Wales offers a unique perspective on this fascinating palace, allowing us to appreciate its beauty and complexity in a new light.
