EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable Roman relief that is housed in the CORBRIDGE Roman Town Museum, Northumberland. The intricate sculpture showcases three prominent figures from ancient Roman mythology - Victory, Neptune, and Mars. Each character symbolizes significant aspects of the Roman Empire's identity and power. At the center stands Victory, her outstretched wings exuding an aura of triumph and glory. She represents the Romans' unwavering determination to conquer new territories and emerge victorious in battle. Flanking her are two mighty gods: Neptune on one side and Mars on the other. Neptune, known as the god of water and sea, holds a trident in his hand, signifying his dominion over these elements. His presence highlights Rome's naval prowess and its reliance on maritime trade routes for economic prosperity. On the opposite side stands Mars, depicted with a fierce countenance befitting his role as the god of war. Armed with a spear or sword, he embodies Rome's military might and strategic brilliance that allowed them to establish their vast empire through conquests. Peter Williams skillfully captured this extraordinary artifact with meticulous attention to detail. Through this print by Historic England, viewers can immerse themselves in ancient Roman culture while marveling at the craftsmanship behind this magnificent relief sculpture.
