This evocative photograph captures the bustling scene of Burford's Hiring Fair, also known as the Mop Fair, in 1895. The High Street of this picturesque Oxfordshire town is transformed into a vibrant marketplace, filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of country life. Henry Taunt, the skilled Victorian photographer, expertly documents the moment, with the sun casting long shadows on the cobblestone street. The stalls, laden with fresh produce, household items, and livestock, stretch from one end of the street to the other.
