EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled OSBORNE HOUSE, Isle of Wight. The Ryde Album, captures a memorable moment in naval and royal history. Taken before 1900, the image showcases a gathering of naval princes at Queen Victoria's Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The princes, mostly relatives of the monarch, include (left to right): Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, the second son of Queen Victoria; a possible Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, grandson of Queen Victoria; Edward, Prince of Wales, the eldest son and future King Edward VII, seated; Prince Henry of Prussia, grandson of the monarch; and probably Prince Louis of Battenberg, grandson by marriage. Prince Alfred, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, is notable for his naval career, having served in the British Royal Navy, and his tragic death in 1899. In this photograph, he is seen in his naval uniform, proudly displaying his naval prowess. The presence of other naval princes, such as Prince Henry of Prussia, who also had a naval background, further underscores the significance of the naval tradition within the royal family. The gathering at Osborne House reflects the close ties between the British monarchy and the European royal houses during the Victorian era. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these princes and their relationships with one another, as well as their shared naval heritage.
