Bomb damage, London 1941 BL5947

City of London. A figure stands amid destroyed and burnt-out buildings. The Brewers Hall in Aldermanbury was built in 1673 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. This hall was then destroyed during the Blitz. A new hall was built in 1960 and stands on the same site. Photographed by Bedford Lemere in 1941

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the devastating aftermath of the Blitz during World War II in London. Taken by Bedford Lemere in 1941, it showcases a figure standing amidst the ruins and burnt-out buildings caused by bomb damage. The Brewers Hall in Aldermanbury, which had been rebuilt after being destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, suffered yet another tragic fate as it was once again reduced to rubble during this wartime assault. The image serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power unleashed upon cities like London during this dark period. Despite its historical significance and resilience, even a building with such deep roots could not withstand the relentless bombings that ravaged the city. However, there is hope amidst this scene of destruction. The photograph also highlights how communities rise from adversity. A new Brewers Hall would eventually be constructed on the same site in 1960, symbolizing both rebirth and determination to preserve history. Bedford Lemere's skillful composition allows us to witness firsthand the impact of war on ordinary lives and historic landmarks alike. This image stands as a testament to human strength and endurance while serving as a somber tribute to those who lived through these challenging times.
