HMS Ophir BL16520_030

SS OPHIR. Interior of the Saloon from the Gallery. Photographed by Bedford Lemere in 1901 for Anderson Anderson & Co. From 1891 the liner was owned by the Orient Steamship Company and carried passengers to and from Australia via Aden and Colombo. In this year, 1901, she was on temporary service as a royal yacht (HMS Ophir), carrying the future King George V and his wife Mary to open the Australian Federal Parliament in Melbourne. Requisitioned for the war effort in 1915, she was returned to the owners in 1918, but was not refitted and was broken up in 1922

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph, taken by Bedford Lemere in 1901, captures the elegant interior of the Saloon on board HMS Ophir, formerly a luxurious ocean liner named SS Ophir. At the time of this image, the ship was temporarily commissioned as a royal yacht, serving as a magnificent vessel for transporting the future King George V and Queen Mary to the opening of the Australian Federal Parliament in Melbourne. Prior to its royal service, the SS Ophir was owned by the prestigious Orient Steamship Company and was known for its opulent accommodations, transporting passengers in style between Australia, Aden, and Colombo. The Saloon, as depicted in this photograph, is a testament to the ship's grandeur, with its ornate decorations, rich furnishings, and meticulously crafted details. In 1915, the HMS Ophir was once again called into service, this time for the war effort. After the war, she was returned to her owners in 1918 but was not refitted and instead met her end in 1922 when she was broken up. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the ship's storied past, showcasing the beauty and elegance of a bygone era in maritime history.
