EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a nostalgic glimpse into the bustling streets of Victorian London. Taken as part of a series documenting the Holborn and Strand improvement works, this particular print showcases Wych Street in all its glory before its unfortunate demise. The image offers a unique perspective, looking west along the street with the iconic Olympic Theatre standing proudly on the right-hand side. The architectural details are striking, showcasing an array of buildings that once lined Wych Street. In the distance, we can spot Hart, Son, Peard and Co. , an ironmongers' shop whose presence adds to the charm of this historic scene. However, it is important to note that shortly after this photograph was taken, all these structures were tragically demolished to make way for the Aldwych development. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time by Historic England Archive's lens, we cannot help but feel a sense of loss for what once was. This photo serves as a poignant reminder of how cities evolve over time while preserving their rich history through visual records like these prints. It allows us to appreciate both our past and present urban landscapes and sparks curiosity about what lies beyond each frame captured by photographers who sought to document change throughout history.
