Cinema organ BB87_02757

Organ at the Odeon Cinema, Haverstock Hill, Hampstead, London. Interior view. The Haverstock Hill Odeon was designed by T P Bennett & Son and opened on 29 September 1934. Cinema organs were rare by this date, and it was Haverstock Hills status as a flagship which merited a Compton organ. This example is in the Art Deco style adopted by the Odeon circuit. Photographed in September 1934 by John Maltby

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the golden age of cinema. The image showcases the magnificent Cinema organ BB87_02757, nestled within the interior of the Odeon Cinema on Haverstock Hill in Hampstead, London. Designed by T P Bennett & Son and unveiled on 29 September 1934, this iconic venue was a true flagship of its time. What makes this particular organ even more special is its rarity for that era. By 1934, cinema organs were becoming increasingly uncommon, but Haverstock Hill's status as a premier establishment warranted the inclusion of a Compton organ. This stunning example perfectly embodies the Art Deco style embraced by the Odeon circuit. The photograph itself was expertly captured in September 1934 by John Maltby, showcasing his keen eye for detail and composition. Through his lens, we are able to appreciate not only the grandeur of this musical instrument but also imagine ourselves immersed in an evening filled with recreation and leisure at this historic cinematic gem. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history frozen in time, let us reflect on how it represents an era when going to the movies was truly an unforgettable experience.
