EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the ruins of Campden House, located in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. The image captures the remains of a once magnificent mansion that was built in 1612 and tragically destroyed in 1645. This particular fragment showcases part of one wall from the west side of the south front. Sir Baptist Hicks, the visionary behind this Flemish-baroque masterpiece, left no stone unturned when it came to crafting an architectural marvel. The fine quality ashlar used throughout the construction speaks volumes about his commitment to excellence and attention to detail. Photographed by Henry Taunt in 1908, this image transports us into a world where grandeur meets decay. It serves as a poignant reminder of how time can erode even the most splendid structures, leaving only fragments behind. The photograph allows us to appreciate both the beauty and tragedy intertwined within these ruins. It invites contemplation on what once stood proudly on this very spot - a testament to human ambition and creativity now reduced to remnants. As we gaze upon this hauntingly beautiful scene captured by Henry Taunt, we are reminded of our responsibility as custodians of history's treasures. Through preservation efforts like those undertaken by Historic England, we ensure that future generations can also bear witness to these evocative reminders of our past.
