EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken around the year 1901 by Maxwell-Lyte, presents Gertrude Jekyll, the renowned garden designer, standing beside the terrace bridge at Deanery Garden in Sonning, Berkshire. The serene and picturesque setting of this image is a testament to the harmonious collaboration between Jekyll and the acclaimed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Deanery Garden, also known as The Deanery, is a beautiful house designed by Lutyens for Edward Hudson, the owner of Country Life. The collaboration between Lutyens and Jekyll resulted in a garden that is a true masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts movement. In this photograph, Jekyll is seen admiring the garden she helped create, her timeless design principles evident in the meticulously planned borders and thoughtful placement of ornamental features. The terrace bridge, with its graceful arches and intricate stonework, is a striking example of the attention to detail and craftsmanship that characterizes both Lutyens' architecture and Jekyll's garden design. The bridge connects the upper and lower terraces, providing a vantage point from which to appreciate the sweeping vistas of the garden and the surrounding countryside. The image of Gertrude Jekyll at Deanery Garden offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the arts of gardening and architecture were at their most innovative and harmonious. This photograph is a cherished reminder of the enduring legacy of these two visionary figures and their collaboration that continues to inspire and influence garden design to this day.
