Mercedes electric bus BL19992

Cut out of a Mercedes electric bus. Electric powered vehicles were first developed in the mid 19th century, but were superceeded by the cheaper and more reliable internal combustion vehicles. The first motorised buses appeared in London in 1902. The Milnes-Daimler model was a popular and reliable bus and numbered around 600 on the streets of London by 1907. The Bedford Lemere daybook records Charles Dewynter Ltd, advertising agents, as clients for this photograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Mercedes electric bus BL19992, a remarkable piece of transportation history. Electric powered vehicles have a long-standing presence, dating back to the mid 19th century. However, their initial development was overshadowed by the emergence of cheaper and more dependable internal combustion vehicles. In this image, we witness an iconic moment in London's transport evolution. The first motorised buses made their appearance on the bustling streets of London in 1902. Among them, the Milnes-Daimler model stood out as a popular and reliable choice for commuters. By 1907, approximately 600 of these buses could be spotted traversing through London's vibrant cityscape. The Bedford Lemere daybook reveals that Charles Dewynter Ltd. , advertising agents at the time, were clients associated with this photograph. This particular snapshot offers us a glimpse into an era when electric buses were still being explored as a viable mode of transportation. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print not only captures an exquisite piece of automotive heritage but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress in our quest for sustainable mobility solutions. It reminds us that even though certain technologies may have been momentarily overshadowed by others due to economic factors or reliability concerns, they continue to inspire innovation and shape our future endeavors in transportation systems worldwide.
