EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 20th century, capturing a moment inside the Riverdale Pumphouse in Hampton, Middlesex. The image showcases the newly installed engines of this remarkable pumping station owned by the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks. The industrial setting is brought to life as we witness three steam-driven triple expansion vertical pumping engines proudly standing tall. These impressive machines were meticulously crafted by the renowned North Eastern Marine Engineering Company, symbolizing a triumph of engineering prowess. Dating back to January 1901, this photograph was skillfully captured by H Bedford Lemere, an acclaimed photographer known for his ability to immortalize architectural marvels. His lens perfectly frames the interior view of this historic site, allowing us to appreciate both its grandeur and functionality. Although time has passed since these powerful engines last roared into action in 1945, their legacy lives on through this striking image. The Riverdale Pumphouse building itself remains intact today; a testament to its endurance and significance within our industrial heritage. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history, we are transported back in time - witnessing not only an extraordinary feat of engineering but also gaining insight into how essential water management was during that era. This photograph serves as a visual reminder of our past achievements and inspires us to continue pushing boundaries in pursuit of progress.
