Waring & Gillow Factory, August 1916 BL23600_002

WARING AND GILLOW FACTORY, White City, Hammersmith, London. A large crowd of people gathered outside the premises of Waring and Gillow in White City, converted for use as a munitions factory during the Great War. The furniture manufacturers, Waring and Gillow were formed in 1897 by the merger of Gillow of Lancaster and Waring of Liverpool. They established a reputation for supplying high quality furniture to some of the richest families in the country. During the First World War, Waring & Gillow (who commissioned this photograph) began producing goods for the war effort. Their factory at White City, made tents for the military. The company also manufactured ammunition belts for use with machine guns, nosebags for horses and protective clothing for use during gas attacks. Photographed by Bedford Lemere & Co. in August 1916

Waring & Gillow Factory, August 1916 - A Snapshot of the Home Front during World War I

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph captures a significant moment in history - the transformation of Waring and Gillow's prestigious furniture factory into a munitions production hub during the Great War. Located in White City, Hammersmith, London, this imposing building served as a beacon of resilience and adaptability. In this snapshot frozen in time by photographer Bedford Lemere & Co. , we see a large crowd gathered outside the premises. Men and women from all walks of life have come together to support their country's war effort. Among them are workers donning protective clothing for gas attacks, diligently producing ammunition belts for machine guns or sewing nosebags for horses on those frontlines. Waring & Gillow was renowned for its craftsmanship and exquisite furniture that adorned opulent homes across Britain. However, when duty called, they swiftly shifted gears to contribute to the war machinery. Their factory at White City became an essential cog in supplying tents for military use - providing shelter amidst chaos. The image not only showcases the industrial might unleashed during wartime but also highlights how women played an integral role on the home front. Breaking traditional gender roles, these resilient women joined men side by side on assembly lines - their dedication evident through every stitch sewn or bullet produced. Adolphe Augustus Boucher's print serves as a poignant reminder of how ordinary people rallied together to support their nation during times of crisis. It
