EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Luppitt Font BB49_00373 in St Mary's Church, located in the picturesque village of Luppitt, East Devon. The font, believed to be either early Norman or late Saxon, is an exquisite example of medieval craftsmanship. The image highlights the intricate details carved onto the font's square bowl and cylindrical shaft. The top section appears to be original, while the rest has been reconstructed at a later date. From this angle, we can observe two sides of the bowl; one side depicts a dramatic scene of two men engaged in combat with shields and swords, symbolizing bravery and strength. On the other side, beautifully rendered wild animals come to life through expert carving. A particularly intriguing feature is a masked face adorning one corner of the font. This enigmatic figure serves as a striking visual element that separates and adds depth to both scenes. St Mary's Church itself boasts rich historical significance with its Norman origins dating back centuries ago. Although rebuilt during the 13th and 14th centuries, it still retains its medieval charm. E M Booty skillfully captures these mesmerizing elements in this print from Historic England. It serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with early medieval artistry and provides us with an opportunity to appreciate our cultural heritage firsthand.
