ST PETERS CHURCH, SOUTHROP, COTSWOLD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Detail of a Norman font with intricate carved patterns and carvings of trefoil arches with figures in each archway, in St Peters Church.
The font is a cylindrical stone piece with a slight taper to the top and a square tiered base. The top few inches of the bowl have intricate patterns and below this are trefoil arches that wrap around the bowl. Above each arch support are small images of a building with a domed roof. Two whole archways are clearly seen, and each one has two figures, one standing over another curled up on the ground. The standing figure on the right is holding a circular shield and holds a weapon that resembles a whip above his head, as if about to strike the man on the ground. The standing figure on the left appears to be armoured, with a long shield, sword and crown. There is some writing on the top of the arches and up the left side of the arches vertical struts. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the exquisite Southrop Font in St Peters Church, Gloucestershire. The Norman font is a true masterpiece, adorned with intricate carved patterns and trefoil arches that encircle its cylindrical stone structure. Standing tall on a square tiered base, the font's top section boasts mesmerizing designs while below it lies a series of archways. Within these archways, one can marvel at the detailed figures that bring life to this ancient artwork. Two complete archways are prominently displayed, each featuring two figures engaged in an intriguing scene. On the right side stands a figure brandishing a circular shield and wielding what appears to be a whip-like weapon poised above his head as if ready to strike the figure curled up on the ground before him. Meanwhile, on the left side stands another figure donning armor and holding both sword and crown. Their regal presence adds an air of majesty to this remarkable piece of history. Adding further interest are small images of buildings with domed roofs positioned atop each supporting column. The font's beauty is enhanced by delicate writing adorning its arches and vertical struts along its left side. This photograph truly captures every minute detail of this medieval treasure - from its ornate carvings to its symbolic imagery - allowing viewers to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating such an extraordinary work.
