Southrop Font BB49_00384
ST PETERS CHURCH, SOUTHROP, COTSWOLD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Detail of a Norman font with intricate carved patterns and carvings of trefoil arches with figures in each archway, in St Peters Church.
The font is a cylindrical stone piece with a slight taper to the top and a square tiered base. The top few inches of the bowl have intricate patterns and below this are trefoil arches that wrap around the bowl. Above each arch support are small images of a building with a domed roof. Two whole archways are clearly seen, and each one has two figures, one standing over another curled up on the ground. The standing figure on the right is holding a circular shield and holds a weapon that resembles a whip above his head, as if about to strike the man on the ground. The standing figure on the left appears to be armoured, with a long shield, sword and crown. There is some writing on the top of the arches and up the left side of the arches vertical struts.
