The lower tier has plain panels, while the middle tier has decorated panels, of which some hinge open to reveal to top of the font, however in the image they are closed. The top panels are also plain, but are topped with pinnacles. Above this is an open crown over and a large rectangular canopy. In the background is a chancel screen which crosses the church and was restored in 1880. Above this is an angel statuette on a wooden bar across the church. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Swimbridge Font, located in St James Church in North Devon. The font is a true masterpiece of Renaissance design, with its lead-lined structure encased in an intricately carved wooden casing that resembles a pulpit. The font features three tiers, each adorned with beautifully panelled details. The lower tier boasts plain panels, while the middle tier showcases ornate decorations. Some of these panels even hinge open to reveal the top of the font, although they are closed in this particular image. The top panels are elegantly plain but topped with delicate pinnacles. In the background of the photo, we can see a restored chancel screen that spans across the church and dates back to 1880. Above it rests an angel statuette gracefully positioned on a wooden bar that stretches across the church. Adding to its allure are Renaissance-style carvings adorning the ends of nearby pews, creating an atmosphere steeped in history and artistry. This remarkable photograph by E M Booty captures not only the intricate beauty of this medieval parish church's font but also serves as a testament to our rich architectural heritage.
