EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the life of Queen Victoria and her beloved family. Taken at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight in 1863, this photograph showcases the royal family gathered around a bust of Albert, their late Prince Consort. It is believed that this image was taken during the time of the Prince of Wales' marriage, as everyone appears to be dressed elegantly for such an occasion. Standing tall on the left is Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who would later become Princess of Wales. Beside her stands Prince Albert Edward, known as the Prince of Wales himself. On his other side is Princess Helena and Grand Duke Louis of Hesse. In front, we see Princess Alice, Queen Victoria herself - regal and dignified as ever - alongside her youngest daughters: Princess Beatrice and Prince Leopold. The identity of another lady in front remains uncertain but may possibly be Crown Princess Victoria (later Empress Frederick) from Prussia. This remarkable photograph not only offers us a glimpse into Victorian monarchy but also serves as a testament to familial love and unity amidst loss. Preserved by Historic England Photo Library, it allows us to cherish these historical figures who shaped an era with their grace and influence.
