APSLEY HOUSE, London. General Rowland Hill (1772-1842), sketched by Jan Willem PIENEMAN in 1821 (WM 1479-1948). A Peninsular veteran and accomplished commander in his own right, at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Hill commanded the II Corps. He led the charge of Sir Frederick Adams brigade against the Imperial Guard towards the end of the battle. For some time it was thought that he had fallen in the melee but he escaped unwounded. He was made Viscount Hill of Almaraz in 1842

This photograph print showcases a sketch of General Rowland Hill, a prominent military figure during the Georgian era and a key commander in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The sketch was created by the skilled Dutch artist, Jan Willem Pieneman, in the year 1821 and is now held at Apsley House in London (WM 1479-1948). Born in 1772, Hill rose through the ranks as a Peninsular War veteran and an accomplished military leader in his own right. At the Battle of Waterloo, he commanded the II Corps and led the charge of Sir Frederick Adams brigade against the formidable Imperial Guard towards the end of the battle. For a time, it was believed that Hill had fallen in the fierce melee, but he managed to escape unscathed. In recognition of his valor, Hill was granted the title Viscount Hill of Almaraz in 1842. The intricately detailed sketch captures the intensity and focus of Hill's gaze, reflecting the unwavering determination that guided him through his military career.
