EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of Bristol's housing development. The image showcases the opening celebration of the 3000th Easiform dwelling in Hareclive Road, Hartcliffe, City of Bristol. A proud woman and her two children, who are the fortunate tenants of this milestone property, stand alongside the esteemed Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. The significance of this event is emphasized by the presentation of a key to the tenant by the Lord Mayor himself. This symbolic gesture represents not only a new home for this family but also highlights their place as part of an ongoing effort by Bristol City Council to provide housing solutions following World War II. The Chairman of the Housing Committee proudly announced that this particular tenant marked an impressive number – being housed or rehoused as the 16,689th individual since 1945. Such statistics reflect both progress and dedication towards rebuilding communities after times of hardship. Notably present at this ceremony was Sir Maurice Laing, whose attendance serves as recognition for his contributions to Bristol's successful house building program. As we admire this photograph from the 1950s, it becomes evident that it encapsulates hope and achievement within its frame - showcasing how collaboration between government bodies and citizens can create positive change in society.
