Second Severn Crossing JLP01_11_62048_06

Second Severn Crossing, M4 Motorway, New Passage, Pilning and Severn Beach, South Gloucestershire. A view of the Second Severn Crossing, looking along the deck of the bridge at night.
The Second Severn Crossing took four years to build and was a joint civil engineering project between Laing Civil Engineering and the French company GTM. The work started in April 1992 and the opening ceremony later took place on 5th June 1996. The crossing is a cable-stayed bridge which stretches over 5000 metres across the River Severn connecting England and Wales, 3 miles downstream from the Severn Bridge which opened in 1966

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring Second Severn Crossing in all its glory. Illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights and car headlights, the bridge stands tall against the night sky, showcasing its remarkable engineering feat. Built over a span of four years, this joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and GTM is a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration. The construction began in April 1992, culminating in an unforgettable opening ceremony on 5th June 1996. Stretching over an impressive distance of 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn, this cable-stayed bridge serves as a vital link between England and Wales. Located just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the iconic Severn Bridge which opened in 1966. The photo invites us to marvel at both the technical brilliance of this modern marvel and its integration into the natural landscape. As we gaze along the deck of the bridge, our eyes are drawn towards distant horizons where land meets water. Beyond being a functional motorway crossing point, it symbolizes connectivity and unity between two nations. It represents progress and innovation while paying homage to those who came before. A true masterpiece captured through lens and preserved for future generations by Historic England Archive - reminding us that even man-made structures can become part of our shared heritage.
