EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic M6 Motorway through the breathtaking Lune Gorge in Eden, Cumbria. The image showcases a dedicated team of two individuals diligently working on a box culvert, symbolizing their contribution to this monumental project. The construction work on the Lune Gorge section between Killington and Tebay was entrusted to John Laing Construction Ltd. , who commenced operations in October 1967. Their unwavering commitment resulted in the motorway being opened to traffic three years later, in October 1970. Throughout this endeavor, Lowgill served as Laing's site headquarters. Published in May 1968 within the esteemed monthly newsletter Team Spirit, this photograph titled "Wishbone box culvert" exemplifies both the complexity and artistry involved in road building during that era. It is evident that civil engineering played an integral role throughout every stage of this ambitious undertaking. As we reflect upon this snapshot from history, it serves as a reminder of human ingenuity and determination to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges. This image encapsulates not only the physical labor required but also represents countless hours of meticulous planning and coordination behind-the-scenes. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this extraordinary photograph allows us to appreciate both the progress made since its capture and how far modern infrastructure has advanced over time.
