Shire Hall, Shinfield Park, Shinfield, Wokingham, Berkshire. A small section of the computer suite at the Shire Hall, the headquarters of Berkshire County Council, with two men in the background looking at computer monitors.
Laings South London Region started working on Berkshires new County HQ at Shinfield Park in early 1976 and completed building work in 1980 with the official opening taking place in April 1982. The complex was designed by the county architect, Richard Paul and consulting engineers were Arman Safier and Partners. The Shire Hall, which was constructed with reinforced concrete and large precast concrete cladding, consists of six octagonal pavilions, linked by a three level podium and two central core structures. The building has since been vacated by the council and has subsequently become the offices for Foster Wheeler and later the Wood Group. This photograph was published in December 1980 in Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a small section of the computer suite at Shire Hall, the headquarters of Berkshire County Council in Shinfield Park, Wokingham. Taken in December 1980, during the final stages of construction by Laings South London Region, it showcases the cutting-edge technology and sleek design of this iconic building. Designed by county architect Richard Paul and consulting engineers Arman Safier and Partners, Shire Hall boasts a unique architectural style. Constructed with reinforced concrete and large precast concrete cladding, it features six octagonal pavilions connected by a three-level podium and two central core structures. In this image, two men can be seen engrossed in their work as they gaze at computer monitors. The room exudes an atmosphere of innovation and progress as these individuals navigate through the world of mainframe computing. It is evident that technology played a pivotal role in shaping local government operations during this era. Since its completion in 1980, Shire Hall has undergone various transformations. Once serving as the nerve center for Berkshire County Council's administrative activities, it later became home to Foster Wheeler before being occupied by Wood Group. This photograph stands as a testament to both technological advancements and architectural brilliance that defined an important chapter in the history of this remarkable building.
