EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a slice of life during the construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. In this image, we see Mrs Glover, the wife of Lima excavator river Jim Glover, delivering groceries to another worker's wife living in a caravan on a temporary site at the power station. Berkeley Nuclear Power Station holds historical significance as it was not only the first commercial nuclear power station in the UK but also one of the pioneering nuclear reactors in Britain. The project was undertaken by civil engineers Laing and commenced on January 7th, 1957. Spanning across an expansive 57-acre site, it housed offices and temporary accommodations for workers like Mrs Glover. The photograph showcases both the camaraderie and resourcefulness that characterized life at Berkeley during its construction phase. It offers a glimpse into how families supported each other amidst challenging circumstances. As Mrs Glover dutifully delivers supplies to her fellow worker's wife residing in a caravan, we witness their resilience and determination to make ends meet while contributing to this monumental project. Historic England Archive has preserved this remarkable snapshot from the 1950s as part of our rich heritage. Through images like these, we gain insight into not just architectural achievements but also human stories that shaped our nation's history.
