Graythorp, Hartlepool. The foundation tub for a 509 Revolver crane being lifted on to a gantry at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield. This photograph is part of a batch taken to show the foundation tub of a 509 Revolver crane being lifted on to a gantry

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the construction of the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock in Hartlepool, England. The image showcases the immense scale of marine engineering works as cranes build cranes. Taken in the early 1970s by A© Historic England Archive, this particular snapshot focuses on the foundation tub for a 509 Revolver crane being delicately lifted onto a gantry at Graythorp. The composition highlights both the precision and strength required to erect such colossal structures. Laing Pipelines Offshore played a pivotal role in transforming this site from its previous identity as William Gray Shipyard into an essential hub for constructing fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs. This ambitious project was part of BP's North Sea Oil Project, aiming to tap into the vast resources beneath those turbulent waters. The photograph offers us a glimpse into history, showcasing not only technological advancements but also human endeavor. With one thousand men working tirelessly on-site during that period, it is evident that their dedication and expertise were instrumental in bringing these impressive tubular structures to life. As we admire this remarkable image, let us appreciate the ingenuity behind every bolt tightened and every beam hoisted high above ground level. It serves as a testament to our ability to conquer challenges and push boundaries when driven by ambition and determination.
