EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring construction of the Bury St Edmunds Sugar Silo in Suffolk. The image offers a unique perspective, looking upwards from inside the silo towards its towering roof structure and conveyor bridge. Dating back to 1924, when a sugar factory first began operating in Bury St Edmunds, this site has played a significant role in the region's history. In 1972, Laing announced their ambitious plans to construct four sugar silos and a new beet handling plant for the British Sugar Corporation at this location. This particular photograph showcases one of these impressive silos during its construction phase. The intricate engineering involved in creating such an enormous structure is evident as you gaze upon this image. The sheer scale of the project becomes apparent as your eyes follow along with the upward lines that lead to the distant roof above. It is worth noting that this photograph does not focus on any specific company or commercial use but rather highlights the remarkable feat of human ingenuity and architectural prowess required to bring such an endeavor to life. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print serves as a testament to both past achievements and ongoing advancements within construction and engineering industries.
