WD AND HO WILLS, WHITCHURCH LANE, CITY OF BRISTOL. An oblique aerial view of the Wills tobacco factory at Hartcliffe, Bristol, from the south, showing both the factory building itself and the office block and amenities complex.
The factory building itself was demolished in 1999 and the site is now occupied by a retail park but the office block and podium amenities complex were listed at Grade II in 2000 and converted into flats by Urban Splash in around 2007

1970s Industry Office Tobacco Factory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the iconic Wills tobacco factory complex in Bristol during its heyday in the 1970s. The photograph showcases both the imposing factory building and the adjacent office block and amenities complex, providing a glimpse into the bustling industrial landscape of that era. The Wills factory, located on Whitchurch Lane, was a significant part of Bristol's history. Although the factory building itself was demolished in 1999 to make way for a retail park, this image preserves its grandeur forever. However, it is heartening to know that the office block and podium amenities complex were recognized for their architectural significance and listed at Grade II in 2000. In subsequent years, these historic structures underwent a remarkable transformation by Urban Splash around 2007. Today, they have been converted into modern flats while retaining their original charm and character. This successful preservation project not only honors Bristol's rich heritage but also provides contemporary living spaces within an esteemed historical setting. As we admire this photograph captured by Historic England Archive photographer Joh, we are reminded of how industries evolve over time but leave behind enduring legacies. The Wills tobacco factory complex stands as a testament to Bristol's industrial past while embracing new possibilities for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
