EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to August 1932, offering a glimpse into the history of West Mill in Smarden, Ashford, Kent. Known by various names such as Cornes Mill or Town Mill, this post mill stands tall and proud in the frame. Despite its disuse at the time of capture, it remains intact with all its intricate details still visible. The image transports us to a different era when windmills were an essential part of rural life. The craftsmanship involved in constructing this post mill is evident from every angle. Its wooden structure stands against a backdrop of lush green fields and clear blue skies, showcasing the harmonious coexistence between man-made structures and nature. Once operated by the Cornes family, West Mill ceased working in 1912 due to changing times and technological advancements. Sadly, it met its ultimate fate when it collapsed in 1953. However, through this photograph captured by Francis Matthew Shea, we are able to appreciate the beauty and significance of this historic landmark before its demise. As we gaze upon this print today, let us remember the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations. It serves as a reminder that even though time may pass and progress may bring new innovations, there will always be value in cherishing our past and honoring those who came before us.
