" Wills, Shaw and Friese-Greene Ready to Film". A publicity shot for the foundation of the Aerofilms aerial photography company taken at the London Aerodrome, Hendon. Francis Lewis Wills was a former Royal Naval Air Service Observer and co-founder of Aerofilms. Claude Friese-Greene, holding the cine-camera, was technical director for Aerofilms in its early days, but is best known as a pioneering cinematographer. We know very little about Shaw, the pilot, probably an AirCo employee. K-109 was a biplane built and owned by AirCo - in 1920 the company was taken over by De Haviland and this model became the DH9b. EDITORS COMMENTS
"Wills, Shaw, and Friese-Greene: Pioneering Aerial Photography Pioneers in 1919 This evocative publicity shot captures the spirit of innovation and adventure that defined the early days of aerial photography. Taken at the London Aerodrome in Hendon, it features three men poised to revolutionize the way we see the world from above. On the left, Francis Lewis Wills, a former Royal Naval Air Service Observer, stands with a confident air, his gaze fixed on the horizon. Wills was one of the co-founders of Aerofilms, a groundbreaking aerial photography company. His vision and expertise in aviation were instrumental in establishing this new industry. In the center, Claude Friese-Greene, technical director for Aerofilms in its early years, holds the cine-camera. Friese-Greene is best known for his pioneering work as a cinematographer in the field of aerial photography. His innovative techniques and dedication to capturing stunning aerial footage paved the way for future generations of aerial photographers and filmmakers. To the right, the pilot, Shaw, is likely an AirCo employee. He sits in the cockpit of K-109, a biplane built and owned by Aircraft Manufacturing Company (AirCo). In 1920, AirCo was taken over by De Havilland, and this model became the DH9b. Shaw's skillful handling of the aircraft was crucial for the success of the aerial photography missions. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of these pioneers, who pushed the boundaries of technology and artistry to create breathtaking aerial views. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of aerial photography and the enduring allure of the skies."
