EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view of St Albans Abbey, taken in 1920, showcases the abbey's majestic presence on the hilltop. The medieval and later town of St Albans can be seen sprawling beyond its walls. The Norman abbey church, a true architectural marvel, is predominantly constructed using Roman brick sourced from the remnants of Verulamium, an ancient Roman settlement nearby. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, this sacred site has been a place of continuous Christian worship for centuries. Its significance as a religious center is palpable from this vantage point high above the ground. The photograph captures not only the grandeur of St Albans Abbey but also offers a glimpse into the surrounding urban landscape that has evolved over time. It serves as a testament to how seamlessly history intertwines with modernity in this vibrant town. Preserved within Historic England's Aerofilms Collection, this image provides us with an invaluable window into our past. It allows us to appreciate both the architectural prowess displayed by our ancestors and their ability to adapt and repurpose materials from earlier civilizations. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are reminded of the enduring power of faith and community that have thrived within these hallowed grounds for generations.
