EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Memorial to the Munich Air Crash, located at Sir Matt Busby Way, Old Trafford in Manchester, England. The memorial stands as a tribute to the 23 people who lost their lives in the tragic event that took place on February 6, 1958. The Munich Air Crash is a dark chapter in the history of Manchester United Football Club. The team, known as the "Busby Babes," was on its way back from a European Cup match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, when the aircraft carrying them and several team officials crashed due to a snowstorm in Munich, Germany. Among the fatalities were eight players and three members of the club's coaching staff. The memorial, designed by sculptor Harry Gray, was unveiled on February 6, 1961, on the second anniversary of the disaster. It consists of a simple, elegant obelisk, surrounded by a circular paving, and features the names of those who perished in the crash. The memorial is a testament to the enduring spirit of Manchester United Football Club and its fans, who continue to remember the lives lost and the legacy of the Busby Babes. The memorial is a significant part of Manchester United's history and is a reminder of the tragic events that shaped the club and the sport of football. It is a place of pilgrimage for fans and a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of adversity. The photograph by Nigel Corrie, taken by Historic England, captures the solemn and reflective atmosphere surrounding the memorial, making it a powerful and moving image that evokes the emotions and memories of those who were touched by the Munich Air Crash.
