Eldon Garden JLP01_10_38141

Eldon Garden, Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Shoppers using the escalators in the Rotunda section of the Eldon Garden shopping centre.
The Eldon Garden shopping centre was a development of 42 shops over 3 storeys and a 477 space carpark. Laing secured the £ 11.5m management contract for the construction in 1987 for Greycoat Shopping Plc. Work began in January 1988 and the centre was open to the public from March 1989 and officially open by Princess Margaret in November 1989. The development had to incorporate the existing pub, now called the Three Bulls Heads. The pub was underpinned and supported whilst its roof was removed and rebuilt so that it was structurally independent of the shopping centre. The Rotunda is roofed by a glazed dome and connected the two main shopping levels with the gourmet food hall on the ground floor.
Eldon Garden is linked to the Eldon Square shopping centre by a 2 storey glazed mall that bridges Percy Street, this had to be constructed overnight when the road could be closed

1980s Shopping Centre Escalator

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling atmosphere of Eldon Garden, a vibrant shopping centre located on Percy Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. Shoppers can be seen gracefully ascending and descending the escalators in the Rotunda section of the mall, adding movement and energy to the scene. Built in 1989 by Laing for Greycoat Shopping Plc, this three-storey development boasts an impressive 42 shops and a spacious 477-space carpark. The construction project was not without its challenges as it had to incorporate an existing pub called Three Bulls Heads. To achieve this, the pub's roof was carefully removed and rebuilt to ensure its structural independence from the shopping centre. The highlight of Eldon Garden is undoubtedly its stunning Rotunda area, which features a glazed dome that elegantly covers the space. This architectural masterpiece connects two main shopping levels while also providing access to a gourmet food hall on the ground floor. To enhance convenience for shoppers, Eldon Garden is seamlessly linked to another popular shopping destination - Eldon Square - via a two-storey glazed mall that spans across Percy Street. Interestingly, this connecting mall was constructed overnight when road closures were possible. This remarkable print from Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into both past and present as we witness shoppers enjoying their retail experience within this iconic Newcastle landmark.
