High Level Bridge UXC01_01_01_0397_32

HIGH LEVEL BRIDGE, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE. A general view from the north bank of the River Tyne, showing the High Level Bridge in the foreground and the Swing Bridge and New Tyne Bridge in the background, seen from the west.
The High Level Bridge is a combined road and railway bridge completed in 1849. The roadway is on the lower beam, and the railways above, supported by six segmental arches of cast iron, and five stone piers. Both levels have open parapets, and the south side of the bridge consists of an ashlar pier which extends towards the river. To the left is the shorter Swing Bridge, a road and pedestrian built 1868-76. It was originally powered by steam pumps which were replaced by electric in 1959. The central swing span can just be seen past the piers of the High Level Bridge. In the background it the New Tyne Bridge, the largest single-span bridge in Britain at the time of its construction, between 1925-28. The two-hinged arch has a span of 531ft, made longer by the approaches on either side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic High Level Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne from a stunning perspective. Taken from the north bank of the River Tyne, the image showcases the bridge in all its glory, with both the Swing Bridge and New Tyne Bridge visible in the background. Completed in 1849, the High Level Bridge is an impressive combination of road and railway infrastructure. Its lower beam serves as a roadway while railways are supported by six segmental arches of cast iron and five stone piers above. The bridge boasts open parapets on both levels, with an ashlar pier extending towards the river on its south side. To the left of this magnificent structure stands another notable landmark -the shorter Swing Bridge. Originally powered by steam pumps until their replacement with electric ones in 1959, this road and pedestrian bridge was built between 1868-76. The central swing span can be glimpsed through the piers of the High Level Bridge. Completing this picturesque scene is none other than the New Tyne Bridge towering over them all. Constructed between 1925-28, it held distinction as Britain's largest single-span bridge at that time. With a two-hinged arch boasting an impressive span of 531ft (made longer by its approaches), it truly leaves spectators awe-inspired. Ursula Clark has masterfully captured these architectural marvels for posterity through her lens, allowing us to appreciate their grandeur and significance within British history.
