EDITORS COMMENTS
Admiralty Arch, The Mall, Westminster, London, as captured in a historic photograph taken from the rooftop of the Grand Hotel in February 1924. This iconic edwardian structure, designed by Sir Aston Webb, stands as a grand urban landscape feature at the eastern end of The Mall, acting as an entrance to the ceremonial approach to Buckingham Palace from Trafalgar Square. Built between 1906 and 1911, Admiralty Arch is a fusion of architectural styles, incorporating a triumphal arch and offices, as well as residential accommodation. The central archway, adorned with intricate sculptural details, is used only on ceremonial occasions. Sir Aston Webb, who also remodelled the main façade of Buckingham Palace, designed Admiralty Arch to reflect the grandeur and opulence of the British monarchy. The photograph, taken in the winter of 1924, offers a unique perspective of the arch, revealing the intricate details of its design, as well as the bustling road below filled with traffic. The image captures the essence of the early 20th century, showcasing the architectural beauty of London during the Edwardian era. Admiralty Arch remains a significant landmark in London's urban landscape, drawing visitors from all corners of the world. Its historical significance and architectural grandeur continue to captivate and inspire, making it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city.
