Palace of Westminster 21759_08

PALACE OF WESTMINSTER, London. Aerial view. Although a Royal Palace has stood on this site since about 1040 AD, most of the present Palace of Westminster, to give the Houses of Parliament its official name, was built 1839-1854. Westminster Bridge was the second masonry bridge over the Thames in London. It was originally built in 1750, and damaging the structure carried the death sentence. The present bridge was built in 1854-62

Bridge Clock Gothic Politics River Tower Urban Victorian Water

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this awe-inspiring photograph, the Palace of Westminster in London stands proudly against the backdrop of the River Thames. A symbol of British political history and architectural grandeur, this iconic building has a rich and fascinating past. Although a Royal Palace has graced this site since approximately 1040 AD, the present-day Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, was primarily constructed between 1839 and 1854. The image captures the intricate details of the Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, with its ornate towers, pointed arches, and intricate stonework. The clock tower, Big Ben, is a prominent feature, its iconic bell chiming the hours and minutes for centuries. The nearby Westminster Bridge, built in 1854-62, adds to the urban landscape, connecting the north and south banks of the Thames. The bridge, a testament to engineering prowess, was originally constructed in 1750. Its masonry design was so significant that damaging the structure carried the death sentence. The present bridge, a masterpiece of the Victorian era, is a stunning complement to the Palace of Westminster. This photograph offers a unique perspective, an aerial view that highlights the harmony between the historic Palace, the iconic clock tower, the majestic bridge, and the tranquil waters of the Thames. It is a snapshot of London's history, politics, and urban development, frozen in time.
