EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to one of the most significant moments in English history - the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Judith Dobie's meticulous reconstruction drawing beautifully captures Duke William of Normandy, who would later be known as William the Conqueror or William I, the first Norman king of England. In this illustration, Duke William stands tall and resolute, exuding an air of determination and leadership. Clad in his regal armor, he commands attention with his piercing gaze and firm grip on his sword. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke; from the intricate patterns etched onto his armor to the folds and creases meticulously portrayed on his garments. The Battle Abbey serves as a dramatic backdrop for this scene, its towering walls symbolizing both strength and resilience. It was within these very walls that Duke William commissioned the abbey to commemorate his victory over Harold II at Hastings. This image transports us to a pivotal moment when two great powers clashed for control over England's destiny. As we admire this graphic illustration by Judith Dobie, we are reminded of how history can come alive through art. It allows us to envision those who shaped our past and appreciate their impact on our present-day society.
