London Docks 1958 EAW071687

LONDON DOCKS, Southwark. Aerial photograph of Greenland Dock, Rotherhithe in June 1958. Also showing South Dock, the River Thames and the entrance to the Millwall Outer Dock (on the Isle of Dogs). Freighters are unloading into barges and butties. The dock was mostly used for Baltic shipping, notably whaling and timber. Greenland Dock is the oldest of Londons riverside docks, originally laid out in 1695 to refit East Indiamen. The commercial docks closed in 1970, and the warehouses have now been replaced by Docklands residential developments (Swedish Quay, Baltic Quay and Brunswick Quay). Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph from June 1958, the London Docks in Southwark come alive with the hustle and bustle of maritime activity. The image, taken from the skies above, showcases Greenland Dock in Rotherhithe, with the South Dock and the River Thames in the background. The entrance to the Millwall Outer Dock on the Isle of Dogs is also visible, as freighters unload their cargo into barges and butties. Greenland Dock, the oldest of London's riverside docks, was originally laid out in 1695 to refit East Indiamen. In this photograph, the historic dock is bustling with activity, as ships from Baltic regions unload their timber and whaling catches. The scene is a testament to the thriving maritime industry that once dominated the London Docks. However, the passage of time has brought about significant changes to this waterfront landscape. The commercial docks closed in 1970, and the once-thriving warehouses have been replaced by modern residential developments such as Swedish Quay, Baltic Quay, and Brunswick Quay. The transformation of the London Docks from a hub of maritime commerce to a vibrant residential area is a fascinating chapter in the city's history. This photograph, taken by Aerofilms, provides a unique perspective of London's maritime past, capturing the essence of a bygone era. The image is a reminder of the important role the docks played in London's history and the ongoing evolution of the city's waterfront.
